my (spoileD) UP ChristmAs
I remember posting a happy blog entry about my Christmas in UP last year. Things are different now, though. There were fewer reasons to be merry.
‘Bittersweet’ probably is the best word to describe the way I feel. Actually, this blog enrty was supposed to be entitled ‘bittersweet UP Christmas,’ but when I checked Bikoy’s site a while ago, his entries about yesterday’s events bore the same title. What a coincidence.
Just goes to show that I share the same sentiments with most of the UP students. My day started out rough, thanks to the traffic jam at the University Avenue, and to Sir de Dios’ insisting to have class amidst everybody being in Christmas mode. After class, I dropped by AS to witness the annual Oblation Run. I still maintain my position last year that the Oblation Run was such a bore. It was even much boring this year. Only a few frat men ran, and they failed to get their message across. Their frat flag was even bigger than the protest statements they were holding. Sad that the people were more interested in seeing naked men running around than the statements they were making.
The UP admin was the one who virtually spoiled my UP Christmas. It cancelled the Lantern Parade on the day itself. wtf? It was due, according them, to security threats. Whatever.
But we, UP students, cannot be stopped. We still held some sort of "rebel" Lantern Parade, spearheaded by the College of Fine Arts. Our college joined the said parade. I, for my part, enthusiastically joined the cheering and waving of the stars and white cloth with the rest of my college. It was a "making the most of what we have" way of making myself happy.
After hanging out with my orgmates in the parade, I went to the CMC booth to meet with Kral and Ken. While walking, we met other fellow FFBs, and shared what turned out to be a crazy night together. Highlights were the African Music concert in front of Music, tambay near Law, ethnic streetdancing with Kontra Gapi, and of course, our mini-show at the AS Steps.
